About the Tuscan Coastline

The Tuscan coast boasts clean and sparkling, warm Mediterranean waters and a coastline characterized by dramatic rocky cliff-faces, beautifully charming sandy beaches, and some of the best diving in the Mediterranean. Lovers of the sea will find a true homage to their passion in Tuscany and its Archipelago and with the emphasis on relaxation and rejuvenation. The area is already frequented by wealthy Italians, renowned for knowing and loving the finer things in life, looking for a peaceful and relaxing holiday. Their favorites include the Island of Elba, the promontory of Monte Argentario and the carnival in Viareggio.

Getting There

Tuscany has two main airports, the Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa and the Amerigo Vespucci Airport, also known as Peretola, in Florence. The Southern part of Tuscany is only about an hour's drive from Fiumicino airport near Rome with frequent flights from all over Europe and the rest of the world.

Tuscany Yacht Charter Types

All types of yachts can be chartered along the Tuscan Coastline with sailing yachts being the predominant way to experience this fantastic part of the Mediterranean. The climate is mild all year round with temperatures reaching as high as 40°C in the summer and no lower than 7°C in the heart of winter.

The area is easily navigated with destinations close to each other, the Italian Riviera and neighboring Corsica and Sardinia, you just have to pick the starting point! We have described some of the more popular destinations on the coastline below and where you are most likely to pick your boat up from but there are hundreds of other little gems out there waiting to be discovered by you.

Viareggio

Viareggio

Viareggio is one of the most famous and traditional coastal destinations along the Tuscan coastline of Versilia. It offers endless wide stretches of beach, exquisite cuisine opportunities and plenty of places to frequent once the sun has gone down. Known as the ‘Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea’, Viareggio is a prime location for many of our yachts to be berthed and is well-positioned as a great place to start your Italian charter adventure with good access to the Cinque Terre, the Tuscan Archipelago and the rest of the beautiful Tuscan coastline.

Livorno

Designed in the Italian Renaissance as the ‘ideal town’, Livorno was made up of a dense network of canals and surrounded by fortified town walls to protect it from the rivaling states of the time. Today, the Venice district preserves most of the original town planning and architectural features from the bridges, to the narrow lanes, noblemen’s houses and canals that lead down to the Medici Port overlooked by towers and fortresses. Livorno is ideally situated to start a journey of the Tuscan coastline, being closest to Gorgona in the Tuscan Archipelago and within easy distance of Corsica and Sardinia. Interestingly the name Livorno translates to the English 'leghorn' which has been used to name a breed of chicken.

Piombino

Piombino Yacht Charter
Piombino

Piombino sits on a headland reaching out to try and touch the stunning island of Elba. It has been a site of human settlement since ancient times and the history of the town is rich and varied. Of particular note was that at the turn of the 19th century Napoleon took the town from the ruling Boncompagni-Ludovisi family to give to his sister Elisa, Her influence led to Piombino becoming known as ‘Little Paris’. Today the town has much to offer the interested visitor; art, folklore, history, diving and fine-dining. The coastline surrounding the town echoes that of the islands in the Tuscan Archipelago it faces, alternating between dramatic rock faces to delightful and charming sandy beaches that soften a seemingly hard edge.

Elba Yacht Charter

The Tuscan Archipelago is a string of islands that lie between the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas to the West of mainland Italy and East of Sardinia and Corsica. From north to south they are Gorgona near Livorno, Capraia, Elba, Pianosa, Montecristo and finally Giglio and Giannutri near Monte Argentario. All the islands are protected in the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago, the biggest marine park in Europe, and are an important cross-over point for many birds migrating from Europe to Africa as well as being home to many rare and endemic species. For this reason, development and tourism in the region is regulated to protect the natural eco-system. Elba is the largest and most popular and easily accessed from the nearby town of Piombino, the island is often described as a smaller version of Sardinia with brilliant diving and rustic island charm.

The wholesome and tasty goodness of the characteristic Mediterranean diet shines through Tuscan cuisine with olive oil, pasta, fresh fish, and prime meat forming the most important ingredients. A renowned product of Tuscany is the white truffle, a favored and much-appreciated variety of these fungi.
